Tennis Betting Guide

Tennis Overview

Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world with a huge following of enthusiasts globally. The origins of the modern game of tennis are believed to have begun in Birmingham, England during the mid 19th century. Harry Gem and Augurio Perera are widely credited as the founding fathers of modern tennis between 1859 and 1865 with the world’s first tennis club being created in 1872 (with the help of two local doctors) in Leamington Spa. From these beginnings in Birmingham the game of tennis’ popularity grew, gaining Olympic recognition in 1896. Fast forward to present day and there are millions of tennis fans across the globe! Matched betting on tennis can prove very profitable, read on for a guide on basic rules and scoring in tennis and also how can get involved with tennis matched betting with Profit Accumulator.

Tennis Basic Rules And Scoring

Tennis is a non-contact racket sport played on a rectangular court with a net across the centre. The aim of the game is to hit the ball over the net landing it within the playing margins of the court and played in a way that the opposing player is unable to return the ball back over the net. Every time you manage to achieve this you win a point which we will look at in more detail in scoring shortly.

In tennis, you can either play in a singles or doubles match. Singles is one player vs one player and doubles involves 2 players v 2 players. For singles the ball must land between the tram lines to be in play, in doubles the ball can land in the tram line borders either side and still remain in play.

Scoring

Tennis is scored in Points/Games/Sets:

Points:

You receive a point for every time the opposing player fails to return the ball. These points are:

  • 15 - 1 point
  • 30 - 2 points
  • 40- 3 points

The fourth point results in the game being won. If a game reaches 40-40 it is called Deuce and when it gets to this point a player must win by 2 clear points to win the game. Leading by 1 point in this scenario is known as Advantage.

These games are accumulated to make up sets. The first player to reach 6 games and be 2 games clear of the other player wins the set e.g 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 etc. If the opponent wins 5 games then you would need to win 7-5.

A tie break can occur when both players reach 6 games each (6-6) and in this circumstance, the player needs to reach 7 points (actual points this time and not 15, 30 etc) to win, again by 2 clear points. If in a tie break the points reach 6-6 then the winner is the first player to be 2 points clear so 8-6 for example.

To be declared the overall winner in the game of tennis you need to be the first player to win 3 sets in the men’s game and 2 sets in the women’s game.

Major Tennis Events

There are many tennis tournaments throughout the world but the big ones are called the Majors or Grand Slam tournaments:

  • Australian Open - January
  • French Open - May/June
  • Wimbledon - June/July
  • US Open - August/September

Betting on Tennis

These tournaments not only attract a lot of media attention but they also attract lots of promotions from the bookies. This makes them an ideal sport to matched bet on, although you do need to be aware of the betting rules prior to placing bets on these. The rules on the settlement of bets can differ dramatically between bookmakers and exchanges. The main rule variance involves tennis retirements; what happens if the player that you have bet on retires or if the game is abandoned?

Bookmakers can normally be placed into three different groups when it comes to tennis rules. Please note that these rules only apply to winner markets on the match, and not necessarily other markets.

Warning - These terms are correct at the time of posting this. If unsure of the rules, you should ALWAYS check them for yourself (use the links provided below). If you do find any changes, then please let us know via support.

Tennis rules type 1 - Bets are valid if one set is completed:

With this category, all bets are valid if at least one set is completed in the match. All of the exchanges fall into this category, so if you're backing a tennis bet with one of the bookies in this group, you can safely lay your bet on one of the exchanges.

* Note on Paddy Power and Betfair Sportsbook - Although the rules match up with the exchanges, the disqualification rules don't. If your selection gets disqualified in the first set then your back bet would lose and your lay bet would be void. This is incredibly rare though (6 players have been disqualified since 1990) so although it isn't much of a risk, you should be aware. If you want to avoid this entirely then you can dutch your bets with Paddy Power or Betfair Sportsbook (the bookie you didn't place your initial bet with).

Tennis rules type 2a - Bets are only valid if the full match is completed.

In this category, bets are only valid if the full match is completed. If a player retires early, all bets are void. There are no exchanges in this category, so you should not lay bets off against bookies in this category. Instead, you would need to dutch your bets between bookies in this group.

Tennis rules type 2b - Bets are only valid if the full match is completed, however, matches do not need to be complete if a player is disqualified.

In this category, bets are only valid if the full match is completed. If a player retires early, all bets are void. There are no exchanges in this category, so you should not lay bets off against bookies in this category. Instead, you would need to dutch your bets between bookies in this group. The difference here is that if a player is disqualified, all bets will be settled on the player progressing to the next round/deemed the winner.

Disqualification is incredibly rare (6 players have been disqualified since 1990). If you're prepared to take the small risk then you can dutch this group with group 2a. In the event of a disqualification you will have one losing bet and one void bet.
