As everyone will tell you, the English Premiership League is the best football league in the world, and it's hard to dispute this with the quality of football that is played. However, the other English football leagues statistically produce more exciting, higher scoring, unpredictable results than the Premier League.

So how does this help the Matched Betting world? Quite simply, the full turnaround ratios are higher in these leagues and give us a higher return on them. If you don't know how this offers works yet, please read this 2up early payout offers post first.

Let's start at the offer that is more common amongst Matched Bettors and look at some figures for the 2022 – 2023 season.

In the Premier League out of the 380 games played only 4 games had a Full Turnaround (FTA) with one being a double turnaround (in the last game of the season between Liverpool and Southampton). This gives us a % of 1.05 of games that had a FTA.

In the Championship out of the 552 matches played 22 games had a FTA and one being a double turnaround. This gives us a % of 3.99% of games that had a FTA.

The results are similar for the other leagues in the English Football league too. So this would mean we would need to be taking 99% matches across every single game in the Premiership compared to 97% matches in the Championship to be with in any sort of profit. I appreciate this is only looking at one season but it seems to be a year on year trend.

Stats from the 5 seasons between 2015/16 and 2019/20 show that 6.3% of all games across this period had a FTA, so has the gap between teams increased? Has the defending improved? Is there no answer?

It’s really hard to say all we can look at is the stats from other English Leagues:

  • League 1 552 games 20 FTAs 3.62%
  • League 2 552 games 25 FTAs 4.53%

Why are there more FTAs in the lower leagues?

There could be a lot of theories with regards to this, but I personally feel that the main reason is they have more to play for and they are more competitive as you don’t have the 4 or 5 (possibly 6) elite teams in the EFL like the Premier League. Yes, there are the teams that have been relegated from the Premier League that have the advantage of parachute payments and maybe able to hang on to some of the players from the previous season.

But the main goal for ALL the teams in the lower league is to get to the Golden Chalice of the Premier League, it will fund the clubs for years to come, build the communities around them up. So if a team goes 2 goals down they will put more effort in to claw that point or 3 points back as they have more to play for. This could be argued for the European places in the Premier League, but I feel its survival first and then Europe as the top 4 or 5 teams have already claimed those places.

In summary, if doing 2ups look at the EFL first, as these will be more profitable in the long run and easier to get lower qualifying losses on your backs and lays.

Are European and Rest of the World leagues even better?

Now we know that Bet 365 and Paddy Power don’t just use the English leagues for 2ups they give us the option of so many more. So are there more opportunities in these leagues for FTAs to occur?

We can just simply look at the stats for the 2022/23 season and compare the leagues.

  • La Liga (Spain) 380 games 6 FTAs 1.58%
  • Bundesliga (Germany) 306 games 10 FTAs 3.27%
  • Ligue 1 (France) 380 Games 18 FTAs 4.74%
  • Serie A (Italy) 380 Games 15 FTAs 3.95%
  • A-League (Australia) 156 Games 11 FTAs 7.05%

Based on the previous season the FTAs to hit were in Australia (which 365 have on their list).

The main point to look at this as well is the total number of games and FTAs that happened. This does not take into account how close the odds were for the teams and the recommendations we give for percentages to take for them.
