Quick answer: in poker, value betting involves trying to get your opponents to call or raise when you have a strong hand, and is roughly the opposite of a bluff.

Here at Outplayed, our main focus is Matched Betting and Value Betting on sports - but there are other kinds of Value Betting out there.

In poker, value betting is an important strategy in the toolkit of the successful player, but it must be said that it’s a very different kind of strategy from Value Betting on sports.

In this article, we’ll take you through how exactly value betting works in poker and how it’s different to Value Betting on sports, as well as the best Value Betting strategies you can use to get the greatest possible profit from your betting.

Value Betting In Poker

In poker, the term ‘value betting’ means that you’re betting with the intention of getting your opponent to call your bet, because you believe you have the better hand. Your aim is to extract as much money as possible from your opponent.

This stands in contrast to bluffing, where your aim is for your opponent to fold under the belief that your hand is the better one.

Poker tacticWhen to useAimActionDesired outcome
Value bettingWhen you have a strong handFor your opponents to call or raise your betIncrease the betting by small increments, or appear to be bluffing by betting bigTo extract as much money as possible from your opponents before winning the round
BluffingWhen you have a weak handFor your opponents to foldBet high, to make your opponents think your hand is better than it isFor all your opponents to fold, allowing you to win the round by default

This is a completely different use of the term to Value Betting in a sports betting context. There, it refers to bets placed at higher odds than are implied by the real probability of that bet winning.

By placing bets on selections with positive expected value (the long term value of the bet based on its odds and its real chance of winning), the value bettor aims to come out in profit in the long term (something made easier by Outplayed's handy Value Betting tools).

Like with Matched Betting, Value Betting on sports aims to make an overall profit from sports betting, but unlike with Matched Betting, you aren’t certain of the outcome in advance.

Although value betting on poker is a very different strategy to Value Betting on sports, the overall aim is the same: to make a profit from your betting activity.

How To Identify Poker Value Bets

With Value Betting on sports, identifying a bet that holds value is the most difficult and time-consuming part of your strategy. You have to perform huge amounts of research in order to establish the true likelihood of a particular selection winning, so that you can then compare this to the odds available at the bookies and identify bets that hold positive expected value.

In poker, however, it works very differently. As you gain experience, you’ll quickly become familiar with the various possible hands, and you’ll know in an instant what the chances are of your opponent holding a better hand than yours.

Texas Hold'em is a game of skill as well as chance. In a landmark AI competition, an algorithm defeated elite human professionals over more than 120,000 hands, highlighting how consistently profitable poker decisions come from mathematically sound strategy rather than luck alone.

As well as being aware of the statistical chances of your opponent holding any given hand, you can also assess their body language and betting behaviour for clues as to what they hold. Of course, they’ll be aiming to mislead you - but experienced poker players are typically highly skilled in reading other players.

If, based on your own hand and what your opponent’s likely to hold, you have good reason to think yours is the stronger, you’ve identified a value betting opportunity. You’ll now want to bet, adding to the available pot, and to encourage your opponent to call your bet, increasing your likely winnings.

Expert Insight

'Even the best players lose plenty of pots. The key is making sure the pots you win are big enough to make up for the ones you lose. Value betting lets you do that.'

Example Of A Poker Value Bet

A poker game, showing one player's hand: two aces, with four cards showing on the table, including another ace

In the game shown above, you can see that the player has been lucky enough to be dealt two aces, a great poker hand on its own. With the ace showing on the table, though, they’ve got the best possible triplet.

While it’s possible for another player to have a better hand, it’s pretty unlikely. The player will therefore want to make the most of their excellent hand by extracting as much profit as possible from their opponents.

The bets made by this player would be known as ‘value bets’, as they’ll be made with the aim of keeping their opponents in the round and risking their chips.

The exact strategy adopted by that player will depend on their reading of the other players. They might decide to make a small bet, to appear less confident in their hand and to make the other players more likely to call the bet.

Alternatively, they might bet high to give the impression that they’re bluffing, hoping that their opponents call their bet in the belief that their hand is actually weak.

Expert Insight

'In the complex tapestry of poker strategy, the 'value bet' stands out as a fundamental yet often misunderstood technique. Far from being a mere declaration of a strong hand, a value bet is a calculated maneuver designed to extract maximum chips from your opponents by enticing them to call with a hand weaker than yours. It’s a delicate balance between confidence in your holding and an astute understanding of your opponent's tendencies and perceived range.'

Poker Value Betting Vs Other Value Bets

If you’re a skilled poker player, value betting will be a critical part of your overall strategy.

Data Insight

Poker remains one of the world's most popular competitive card games. The 2025 World Series of Poker Main Event attracted 9,735 entrants and generated a prize pool exceeding $90.5 million, illustrating the scale of modern high-level poker competition.

But if you’re not much into poker, there are other Value Betting techniques you can employ to come out in profit, and in general the learning curve is much less steep than in poker.

Value Betting on sports, as we’ve mentioned, requires you to identify bets with inflated odds, meaning that you would expect to come out in profit by placing bets that hold positive expected value in the long term.

Manually locating bets with positive expected value is a time-consuming task, heavy on research and reliant on a deep knowledge of the sport you’re betting on.

However, Outplayed has a range of tools specifically designed to simplify Value Betting, by doing all the hard work of identifying bets that hold value on your behalf.

Outplayed’s Pro and Elite memberships give you access to a range of tools that have the potential to make you £1000+ extra in profits every single month.

Our powerful Value Betting tools include the following:

  • Lucky Finder. This software automatically builds you Lucky 15 bets with positive EV, offering you the opportunity to make incredible profits in the long run.
  • Golf Master. Available with the Elite membership package, this tool identifies high value each-way golf bets, with the potential to make hundreds of pounds a month all year round.
  • Steam Chaser. Available with the Elite membership package, this is an incredibly powerful tool designed to take advantage of delays in bookie odds software, which give you the opportunity to bet on overvalued selections.

We do recommend that you’re an experienced matched bettor or sports bettor before you dip your toe into Value Betting - this isn’t a risk-free technique, and you can see downswings in your profit.

We also strongly recommend that you have a solid starting bankroll, of around £1000 or more, before you embark on your Value Betting journey.

If that applies to you, though, Value Betting can be the key to unlocking thousands of pounds of extra profits from sports betting, all made quick and easy with Outplayed’s software.
