A Match Treble in darts is a bet on one player to achieve three outcomes in a single darts match. The three outcomes are:

1. Win the match

2. Score the most 180’s

3. Achieve the highest checkout

All three outcomes must land for the bet to be successful. If only one or two of them come true, then it won’t pay out.

If the players are tied for most 180’s or highest checkout, then the bet will also lose.

So, let’s take a look at Match Treble betting in more detail including each component, the advantages and disadvantages, and tips for successful Match Treble betting.

Match Treble Components

The three betting markets that make up a Match Treble bet in darts are match winner, most 180’s and highest checkout. If you need a refresher on how darts scoring works, check out our darts betting guide.

Match Winner

Placing a match winner bet is usually the simplest bet you can place. In darts, there are two players and you’re betting on which one of them will win. Normally for this bet, nothing else matters other than the eventual winner.

However, in a darts Match Treble bet, it is just one of the components that needs to land. Even if you get the other two parts of the bet correct, if your chosen player doesn’t win, your bet will lose.

Most 180’s

180 is the highest number of points a player can get in three darts with one visit to the oche. It is very well-known for the elongated ‘one hundred and eighty’ shout that the darts caller gives when a player hits one.

180 betting is a common darts market and you can usually place bets on how many 180’s there will be in a match, which player will score the most, or how many 180’s a specific player will score.

In a Match Treble bet in darts, the player you choose must score more 180 totals than their opponent. It doesn’t matter how many they score, as long as it exceeds the total number that the other player threw. If both players score the same number of 180’s, the bet will lose.

Highest Checkout

A darts checkout is the total number of points scored by a player in their final visit to the oche where they win the Leg.

A Leg can only be finished when the player hits a double score. Therefore, the highest checkout a player can have is 170 because this is the biggest score that can mathematically be accomplished in three darts which concludes with a double (2 x 180’s followed by a bullseye).

Checkouts are a big betting market in darts with examples such as placing bets on what the highest check out will be, who will score the highest checkout and how many 100+ checkouts a player will get.

In the Match Treble bet, the player you bet on must score the highest checkout of the match. It doesn’t matter what the checkout is or how many big checkouts they get, it all depends on whether your player’s highest checkout is bigger than the opponents highest checkout.

If both players score the exact same highest checkout then the bet will be lost.

How To Place A Match Treble Bet

Match Treble bets are different to bet builders in that you don’t have to select multiple components. They are also different to accumulators because all of the outcomes relate to one single match.

Treble Bets are common in lots of different sports, such as horse racing, football or snooker, but this involves betting on three different games or races. Treble betting is not the same at Match Treble betting in darts.

Placing a Match Treble bet in darts is really easy to place as you simply select the player you think will achieve the three outcomes. You don’t have to select the individual components, it’s one bet on one single player.

All you have to think about is what odds are on offer and what stake you want to bet.

Examples Of Match Treble Bets In Darts

In the recent Premier League Darts tournament, we can give two examples of Match Treble bets, one successful and one not.

In the final match between Luke Littler and Luke Humphries, Littler won the match (11 - 7), he threw the most 180’s (10 vs 5) and he had the highest checkout (141 vs 134). If you had placed a Match Treble bet on Littler, you would have won the bet.

However, a couple of weeks earlier in a match between Michael van Gerwen and Luke Littler, van Gerwin won the match (6 - 1), he threw the most 180’s (4 vs 2), however, it was Littler who had the highest checkout at 82, while van Gerwen’s highest was 74. In this case, a Match Treble Bet on either player would have resulted in a loss.

Advantages Of Match Treble Bets In Darts

There are a number of pros to placing Match Treble betting in darts such as:

Higher Odds – the odds of each of the three elements – match winner/most 180’s/highest checkout are multiplied to give the Match Treble bet odds, so it can be highly attractive

Simple to place – all of the individual elements are already in place you just need to choose your player

Added interest – it can be more exciting watching a match when the player needs to do more than just win. It keeps things interesting throughout the full match as 180’s and high checkouts can happen any time

Occurrence – dominant players who play against lesser ranked players often tick all of the boxes needed for the Match Treble bet when they win. So it can be a good bet to place in the early rounds of tournaments

Disadvantages Of Match Treble Bets In Darts

All in - All three occurrences need to happen for the bet to win

Ties - If either component is tied between the players then the bet will lose

Availability - Match Treble Bets aren’t always available for all tournaments

Predictability – The bet can be hard to predict between elite darts players who both play at the top level

Tips For Placing Successful Match Treble Bets In Darts

If you’re thinking of placing Match Treble bets in darts, then here’s our top tips:

Do Your Research

It's one thing to look at the recent form and success a darts player might be having, but that won’t tell you if they have a record of high checkouts or throwing lots of 180’s.

These stats are easily available online for all darts matches from the big tournaments so it’s worth looking into them. If a player is known for scoring many 180’s or completing high checkouts then this will give you an edge when betting.

As an example, in Premier League Darts, Luke Humphries hit more 180’s in a match than his opponent 63% of the time while Peter Wright only achieved this 33% of the time.

Head To Head Statistics

Players often have one or two opponents that they struggle to beat, regardless of their current form. Just the same as football clubs have bogey teams.

This can be caused by a difference in playing style, playing speed or just a psychological disadvantage due to previous results.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to check on the previous head to head data between the two players in a match before you place a Match Treble Bet.

Bet On Early Rounds

When there is a significant difference between the two players form or ability, then it is more likely that the better player will hit all three markers for the Match Treble bet to come off.

Early rounds of big knockout tournaments such as the PDC World Championships can therefore bring lots of potential for placing Match Treble bets in darts.

Match Format

There are two different formats for darts scoring - match play mode and set mode.

Match play mode is scored in Legs only, whereas set mode is scored in Legs and Sets.

Some darts players prefer one format over the other and subsequently play better. Set mode comes with added pressure to play more strategically and some players thrive on this, while others struggle. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the difference and how players perform.
