Bet365 is one of the best known bookmakers in the UK, and its founder, Denise Coates, is almost as well known in her own right for being the highest paid chief executive in Britain. Bet365 enjoys the highest share of the market in the UK, although its popularity with consumers isn’t quite so high. In a recent YouGov poll it managed a measly 22nd place among gambling operators (based on approval ratings), falling well below competitors such as Betfred, Coral, SkyBet and PaddyPower.

So what makes Bet365 so successful, if it isn’t its popularity? In this article, we’ve analysed every aspect of Bet365’s operation, making a detailed assessment of its sportsbook and casino products, its welcome offers and regular promotions, usability, security and its customer support, to see just how well it rates against its competitors.

Bet365’s Background

Despite their dominance, Bet365 are relative newbies to the British bookmaking scene. They were founded in 2000 by Denise Coates, who at the time was managing director of the family’s chain of betting shops. They focused on the online betting scene, selling their betting shop chain in 2005, and went from strength to strength, making Denise Coates the highest paid woman in the world by 2018.

Bet365 is now the biggest bookie in the world, and has begun expanding internationally. It has launched operations in the United States (in states where gambling is legal), as well as Canada, much of Europe and Australia, and seems set to continue its exponential growth for the foreseeable future.

Bet365 has been subject to several controversies over the years, most famously regarding Denise Coates’ incredibly high salary; despite Bet365 posting a loss of over £70 million (largely due to their North American expansion), she paid herself a salary of £221 million. Bet365 has also been criticised for occasionally refusing to pay out on bets, and in August 2024 was required to pay out over $519,000 to customers in New Jersey who hadn’t received their winnings.

Welcome Offers

Unlike most bookies, Bet365 allows you to complete multiple welcome offers, so you don’t necessarily have to choose between their sportsbook, casino and other offerings. You may have to ensure that you complete some of the welcome offers within 30 days of registration (e.g. for the games offer), though, so double check the terms of each offer before starting it.

Sportsbook

Bet365’s sportsbook stands out for its extensive range of sports and markets, as well as its competitive odds. Bet365 is well known for working hard to ensure its odds are at the top end of the market, and its efforts have paid off for consumers, who’ll be hard pushed to find consistently better prices elsewhere.

Regular promotions

Bet365 have a fantastic range of regular promotions, especially during major events like Premier League football matches and horse racing festivals. Many offers will run along the lines of ‘Bet £10 and get a £10 free bet’, often on bet builders or on specific matches. They also have regular ‘Bet £5/£10 and get free spins’ offers, which, although not risk free, are usually worth doing for matched bettors. Bet365 is often thought of as one of the best bookies for Matched Betting thanks to their regular and generous offers.

You can also expect to see regular ‘Refund If’ offers, where you receive a refund of your stake in the form of bet credits if your original bet is unsuccessful. So for example, you might see, ‘Place a £10 bet builder on Arsenal v Liverpool and get £10 in bet credits if it loses’. This effectively gives you a second chance of placing a winning bet if your qualifying bet is unsuccessful.

As well as this, you can expect to find regular price boosts on particular races or types of bet (e.g. bet builders), and free games such as ‘6 Scores’, which allows you to predict the scores of six matches and win prizes if your predictions are correct.

Range of games

Bet365 have a wide selection of games within their casino, games and live casino sections, a number of which are exclusive to their site. You’ll also find plenty of familiar favourites, such as the Big Bass series, Starburst and Gold Blitz.

Regular promotions

Bet365 have a good variety of regular casino offers available, including free games such as the Prize Matcher and free Bingo scratchcards, as well as offers with staking requirements, which reward you with potential prizes.

Other Promotions

Bet365 feature regular promotions on their other products as well, with chances to win prizes through their poker and bingo sections. For bingo lovers their 3.65% cashback offer is likely to appeal, while poker aficionados will appreciate the chance to demonstrate their skills by climbing the poker leaderboards.

Usability

Bet365’s website feels fairly slick, if a little utilitarian. As with most bookies, promotions and highlighted markets dominate the homepage, with their full sports list (and other specials markets) on the left. We very much appreciate the prominent search bar at the top of the page - making it a doddle to track down the event you’re looking for.

Unlike many bookies, though, no space is taken up by your betslip, which helps their homepage feel less cluttered. Instead, your betslip pops up at the bottom of the screen when you make a selection, which strikes us as a rather more elegant solution.

Event pages are laid out efficiently, with a brief indication of recent performance for each team at the top of the page, and the rest of the page devoted to available markets, which are clear and easy to navigate.

Bet365’s casino and games sections, meanwhile, are again pleasingly organised, without the crowded feel casino sections can often have. Again, the prominent search tool is something we approve of, given how tricky it can often be to track down a specific game among the hundreds available.

The Help Centre is rather less aesthetically pleasing - it’s clear that minimal effort has gone into designing it! - but it is nonetheless logically organised, with clear categories making it straightforward to find the information you’re looking for.

Safety And Security

Bet365’s offers ‘medium protection’ for funds it holds, according to the Gambling Commission’s ratings system. When you deposit with Bet365, your funds are held in separate accounts, meaning that in the event of insolvency, your funds would be protected. While you are not 100% guaranteed to receive your money back, Bet365’s arrangements should ensure that you do.

When it comes to safer gambling, Bet365 have a dedicated centre for safer gambling tools and advice. This includes a myth busting section, a variety of gambling restriction and self-exclusion tools, and links to organisations who offer help to those who are struggling with problem gambling.

Service And Support

Bet365 seems relatively typical as modern online companies go. They offer live chat 24/7, but don’t advertise their phone number, meaning you have to go hunting if you want to speak to someone on the phone.

Bet365 App

Bet365’s app mirrors its website, and is quick and easy to get to grips with - which is fortunate, given the number of bettors who perform all their betting via their phones these days.

Its homepage features promotions prominently near the top, with price boosts and highlighted markets further down, much like on the website. At the bottom of the screen you can swap between main sections, including a list of all sports, in-play betting, the my bets section and casino (Bet365 do have a dedicated casino and games app, but as there’s a casino section on their sportsbook app you may not consider it necessary to download both).

For matched bettors, Bet365 is one of the best bookies to have in your arsenal - so if you’re thinking of signing up to take advantage of their sports welcome offers, it’s well worth doing.
